MISSION STATEMENT
“Go make disciples to all nations near and far.”
This was the greater commission given by Jesus Christ to all the people that become born again. I believe that this is the first and greatest stage in my growth as a performer but also a born again Christian.
BACKGROUND
Peter Mugarura-Mutana also known as Dj Twonjex was born into a reverends home, who was already into music (he used music as a tool in ministry) but more so a born again pastor believing in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and savior. I was brought up to love and serve the Lord as my first duty to God and then love my neighbor as I love my self, work hard but also remain a faithful Christian. I do believe I did that for the first half of my life, but I felt that was not my path so I changed lanes.
In 1997, I decided to rebel against everything my father taught me and go my way, down the road that I was not sure about; drinking and smoking as the order of the day. I do believe to this day that the Lord was on my side, seeing that I was never caught while I was in school. (Please note that I don’t boast of not being caught, I just want to state the fact the Lord had a plan for my life.)
In 2000, I gave my life to the Lord Jesus Christ; I do believe that the road has been tough and rough. But I know that this is a state of molding me into the perfect Christian. Trials and temptations come through all sorts of forms and I do believe that one day I will look back and believe that it was only God who guided me through this path to be a testimony of his love and grace upon my life.
DEVELOPING THE MINISTRY
In December of 2000, I met a Dj called Dj Moz from Nairobi. I was at a conference and when it ended I decided that I would have him over in Uganda. I did host him in May 2001 and we did a couple of shows. Then even the dance and song were not really accepted in Uganda. It was still in the stage where, the gospel music only came for the western world and the only kind of music that boomed in Uganda was Praise and worship, a factor in the music that has remained strong.
However my friend, generously accepted among the people, went back happy. I do believe that was the beginning of my walk to becoming a Dj. I started playing with two disc men and going to all the wedding and parties. Later I developed and begun playing at parties with computers and grew with what I could afford.
For about 5 years, I developed the skill of being a Dj on the computer and I knew that was the direction I was going in. However in 2005, I met another Dj called Dj Nevs, also from Nairobi. We chatted and he gave me the greater inspiration to develop more in to a club and concert Dj. That entailed having better equipment, and learning the skill in order to give competition but also, be a better Dj in the music industry. Since then I have been able to develop, purchase the equipment and expose myself to the public.
WHAT DO I DO NOW?
For the past few months I have been able to start getting a resident place to always play at, so that people can be able to come and see but also get in contact with this field seeing that it is a new concept in the gospel areas.
I have been at different concerts and functions trying to promote the aspect of the gospel Dj, who plays like a club and concert Dj. I do believe that with time the amount of events will grow and people will be able to accept and develop the need to have a professional Dj at all their functions.
Now, I play at Pablo Live every Friday at Open House from 7-10pm and on 104.1PowerFM every Saturday from 3-7pm
WHO AM I TARGETING?
I am trying to target the people who love listening to gospel music. My mission is to win souls but also try and show the people both saved and not saved that gospel music is class, has the fashion of our every day life, but also needs enough support to grow.
In one way or another I am trying to get the people that love gospel music to like it enough in all its forms; dance hall, reggae, roots, Hip hop, Rnb, Zouk, Salsa, name any style: that is what I want the people to love.
I am also targeting the sponsors. I do believe that when I am at a function and I play enough of our local music, we will be able to have a wider listener-ship, and this will interest the sponsors to attach themselves to this kind of music, realizing that it will help them sell their products. (As a matter of fact I do not only believe I am a Dj, but I also believe that I am a promoter in my own making.)
Third and most importantly, I target the non believers. The concept among the non believers of having a professional Dj at all your functions is developing rapidly. That even now we have concerts that are basically to promote Djs. Some Djs are even bigger than the musicians. With this concept, I will try to attract the attention of the non believers. By playing as well as the secular Djs, I will be trying to state that even when you get saved, there is still the ability for whoever has become saved to have a wonderful and fruitful time in Christianity. Through this, they will be pulled more to becoming a born again Christian, and I am sure that it has worked before and it will continue to work as long as God is on my side.
HOW DO I DO THIS “WORK”?
In August 2005, I bought Dj equipment that comprises of 2 CDJs-Gemini CFX30, a mixer-Behringer 200VMX and later a smaller Dj mixer to help the older one. This is the equipment I have been using for the past eight months. I have been blessed by it and I hope that at my anniversary I will be able to buy a new machine in order to continue developing the skill and talent in this ministry/work.
Approaching musician, producers, artistes, both in the secular and gospel worlds has helped me be able to develop the skill, but also develop the gospel music collection. But more so, meeting with the gospel musicians and artistes, has helped me become more common among them, that they can be able to invite me to go on stage with them at their launches, and this has helped develop my skill among the audience, but also make me known among audiences in and around Kampala.
Financially, I have been supporting myself. I do believe that some times I do not have the finances to be able to do this kind of work, but God in his great mercies has enabled me to carry on my work. I decided that since I was going into my own form of full time ministry, I would work around the church as an alternative source of income. I will soon have to have a constant in let of income and I do believe that God will provide the income at His own timing.
